Mount Russell (Scouting Hike)
Lone Pine, California
Southern Sierra Nevada
Elevation: 14,086'
Date: August 1, 2006 (Tuesday)
Climbers: Randy Isbell (solo climb)
Goal: Find out if the 'Rockwell Variation' is a better way to reach the Russell-Carillon saddle.
Route: Mountaineers Route to Upper Boy Scout Lake to the south face of Mount Russell.
Distance: 10 miles (round trip from trailhead)
Elevation reached: 12,500 feet (bottom of Russell's south face)
Start time from trailhead: 5:00 AM
Arrived at Upper Boy Scout Lake: 10:00 AM
Arrived at bottom of Russell's south face: 12:30 PM
  Back to trailhead: 5:30 PM
Total time: 12 hours, 30 minutes
Scouting Conclusion: Successful navigation up to the bottom of Russell's south face (below the 'Rockwell Variation'). This route avoids the steep, sandy 'slog', but it requires a lot of slow, tedious 'boulder-hopping'. I did not like this route. I'll stick to the 'slog'.
